Homestyler: free 3D home design in the browser — what you get, and what costs money
Homestyler started inside Autodesk in 2009 as one of the first online 3D home-design tools with cloud rendering. Today it is a standalone platform that reports over 15 million registered users across 220+ countries. You draw a floor plan, drop furniture from a library of more than a million models, and render the room on their servers instead of your own machine.

The free plan is the real product
Most “free” design tools are demos. Homestyler’s Basic plan is not: the 2D floor planner, the 3D view, the furniture and material library and cloud rendering are all included. The catch is render quality and speed — free renders come out at 1K, and you queue behind paying users. For laying out a room, testing a colour scheme or checking whether a sofa fits, that is enough.
What the paid plans add
| Plan | Price (annual rate, as listed) | What you are paying for |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Free | Floor planner, library, 1K cloud renders |
| Pro+ | from $6.8 / month | Fast, higher-quality renders; roof editing; more models and templates |
| Master+ | from $11.8 / month | Everything in Pro+, plus unlimited 4K image rendering and uploads |
| Team | from $19.9 / seat / month | Shared design space and shared model library for studios |
The honest way to read that table: pay only when rendering becomes the bottleneck. If you are producing client-facing images every week, Pro+ pays for itself in time saved. If you are designing your own flat once, stay on Basic.
Where it falls short
- It is not CAD. Dimensions are good enough for layout, not for a builder’s drawings.
- Browser-bound. Large scenes get sluggish on older laptops, and you cannot work offline.
- The library is the moat and the trap. Real-brand furniture is plentiful, generic pieces less so — you will sometimes design around what exists rather than what you want.
- Learning curve is real. Expect an evening before the first result looks like your room, not a catalogue.
Who should use it
Homeowners planning a renovation, students learning interior design, and small studios that need quick visualisations without a SketchUp-plus-renderer pipeline. Professionals who already own a full CAD and rendering stack will find it too simple.
FAQ
Is Homestyler actually free?
Yes. The Basic plan is free and includes the floor planner, the furniture library and cloud rendering at 1K resolution. Paid plans mainly buy you faster and higher-resolution renders and more storage — you do not need them to design a room.
Do I have to install anything?
No. It runs in the browser (there is also a mobile app). A stable connection matters more than a powerful computer, because rendering happens on Homestyler’s servers, not yours.
What does the “from $6.8/month” price mean?
That is the annual-plan rate shown on Homestyler’s pricing page (“save 40%”). Month-to-month billing costs more. Check the pricing page for the current numbers before you buy — they change with promotions.
Who is it not for?
If you need construction documents, precise CAD dimensions or engineering output, this is the wrong tool — it is a visualisation and layout tool for homeowners, students and interior designers, not a drafting package.
